Nowadays most laptop batteries are rechargeable ones; however, they may not deliver their full rated capacity when new and will require priming or formatting. Laptop battery users have reported some capacity gains by cycling these batteries after long storage. Here you can see the priming of both lithium-ion battery and nickel-based battery.

Lithium-ion Battery

Lithium-ion batteries deliver full power after the initial charge. Manufacturers of lithium-ion cells insist that no priming is required. However, priming is beneficial as an initial start and to verify battery performance. Excessive cycling should be avoided because of wear-down effect.

The internal protection circuit of lithium-based batteries is known to cause some problems after a long storage. If the battery is left discharged after use, the self-discharge will further drain the pack and eventually drip the protection circuit at about 2.5 volts per cell. At this point, the charger will no longer recognize the battery and the pack appears dead. Advanced battery analyzers (Cadex) feature the Boost program that activates the protection circuit to enable a recharge. If the cell voltage has fallen below 1.5V/cell and has remained in that state for a few days, a recharge should be avoided for safety reasons.

Acer Aspire 550x Battery

To reduce the self-discharge on newly manufactured batteries, advanced lithium-ion packs feature a sleep mode that keeps the protection circuit off until activated by a brief charge. Once engaged, the battery remains operational and the advantage of the sleep mode no longer applies.

Nickel-based Battery

Manufacturers recommend to trickle charge a nickel-based battery for 24 hours when new and after long storage. This service brings all cells to equal charge level and redistributes the electrolyte to remedy dry spots on the separator brought on by gravitation of the electrolyte. It is advisable to verify the capacity with a battery analyzer before use. This is especially important in critical applications.

Cycling (priming) is recommended to regain lost capacity after a nickel-based battery has been stored for 6 months or longer. A slow charge followed by one or several discharge/charge cycles will do this. The recovery rate is governed by the condition under which the battery was stored. The longer and warmer the storage temperature, the more cycles will be required. The Prime program of the Cadex battery analyzers automatically applies the number of cycles needed to regain full capacity.

Nickel-based batteries are not always fully formed when leaving the factory. Applying several charge/ discharge cycles through normal use or with a battery analyzer completes the forming. The number of cycles needed to attain full capacity differs between cell manufacturers. Quality cells perform to specification after 5-7 cycles. Those lacking formation may need 50 or more cycles to reach acceptable capacity levels. What is the difference between priming and forming? For the user, both symptoms manifest themselves as insufficient capacity. The difference may be explained in that forming needs to be done only once when the battery is new, while priming must be repeated after each prolonged storage.

Desktop computer has the quiet and efficient liquid-cooling system to avoid overheat in the computer operating process, so many computer gamers love to play games on desktop computers. Power users these days are not necessarily sitting in front of the beige base tower of old, however – other formats like the All-in-One and laptops have benefited from significant processing, memory and storage boosts in recent years.

The following video features the company’s Zack Fanning explaining and demonstrating the new slim form factor liquid cooling technology.

We’ve already seen liquid-cooling specialist Asetek squeeze its technology into a 2.28-inch thick All-in-One prototype, but now the company has developed a slim liquid cooling system for notebooks that’s said to improve acoustic and thermal performance without increasing the form factor.

Asetek has chosen to showcase its new cooling solution in an Alienware M18x gaming laptop with the Core i7 processor overclocked to 4.4GHz and the dual GPUs ramped up to 800MHz, which would have been too much for the original heat pipes to handle.

Acer TravelMate 2484WXMi Battery – $ 29.37

Taking advantage of the fact that the CPU and GPUs rarely fully stress at the same time during real world operation, the system interconnects all of the laptop’s thermal management modules to extract heat from the CPU,GPU, effectively borrowing idle cooling capacity from each other. If the laptop is running on the laptop battery, the battery also produces heat. The slim form factor liquid cooling technology’s coldplate is also said to have less thermal resistance than a heat pipe.

The upshot is that the Asetek system allows for higher-performance components to be used in thin devices like laptops than would be possible using air-cooled management solutions. In tests, the new technology resulted in an 18 percent performance improvement in the 3D Mark 11 benchmark score, a 16 percent improvement in PCMark Vantage scores, and Futuremark’s 3D Mark Vantage score went up by 23 percent.

Do you know right guidelines in Li-ion laptop battery in charge procedures? Maybe you have heard of ‘miracle chargers’, which claim to restore and prolong batteries. However, there is only one way to charge the Li-ion laptop battery. If you find a super-fast charging solution apply for your battery, you’d better not use it to charge your battery, for it will harm the normal laptop battery charging process.

The early graphite system demanded a voltage limit of 4.10V/cell. Although higher voltages deliver more capacity, cell oxidation shortened the service life if charged above the 4.10V/cell threshold. This problem has been solved with chemical additives. Today, most Li-ion cells are charged to 4.20V with a tolerance of +/- 0.05V/cell.

The charge time of most chargers is about 3 hours. The battery remains cool during charge. Full charge is attained after the voltage has reached the voltage threshold and the current has dropped low and leveled off.

Dell PA-15 150W 19.5V 7.7A Adapter

Increasing the charge current does not shorten the charge time by much. Although the voltage peak is reached quicker with higher current, the topping charge will take longer. Figure 1 shows the voltage and current signature of a charger as the Li-ion cell passes through stage one and two.

Figure 1: Charge stages of a Li-ion battery. Increasing the charge current on a Li-ion charger does not shorten the charge time by much. Although the voltage peak is reached quicker with higher current, the topping charge will take longer.

Some chargers claim to fast-charge a Li-ion battery in one hour or less. Such a charger eliminates stage 2 and goes directly to ‘ready’ once the voltage threshold is reached at the end of stage 1. The charge level at this point is about 70 percent. The topping charge typically takes twice as long as the initial charge.

No trickle charge is applied because Li-ion is unable to absorb overcharge. Trickle charge could cause plating of metallic lithium, a condition that renders the cell unstable. Instead, a brief topping charge is applied to compensate for the small self-discharge the battery and its protective circuit consume. Depending on the battery, a topping charge may be repeated once every 20 days. Typically, the charge kicks in when the open terminal voltage drops to 4.05V/cell and turns off at 4.20V/cell.

Apple MacBook 13 inch MA254SA/A Battery

What if a battery is inadvertently overcharged? Li-ion batteries are designed to operate safely within their normal operating voltage but become increasingly unstable if charged to higher voltages. When charging above 4.30V, the cell causes lithium metal plating on the anode; the cathode material becomes an oxidizing agent, loses stability and releases oxygen. Overcharging causes the cell to heat up.

Much attention has been placed on the safety of Li-ion to prevent over-charge and over-discharge. Commercial Li-ion battery packs contain a protection circuit that prevents the cell voltage from going too high while charging. The upper voltage threshold is typically set to 4.30V/cell. Temperature sensing disconnects the charge if the cell temperature approaches 90°C (194°F); and a mechanical pressure switch on many cells permanently interrupt the current path if a safe pressure threshold is exceeded. Exceptions are made on some spinel (manganese) packs containing one or two small cells. The charge process of a Li-ion Polymer is similar to Li-ion. These batteries use a gelled electrolyte to improve conductivity.

Here I’ll introduce you both hardware issues and software issues. You can firstly check hardware issues and then check the software issues.

Hardware Issues

Mechanical Issues – One thing most people forget is that a computer is still a collection of mechanical parts. When these malfunction, they slow down a PC’s performance.

Acer Aspire 3684NWXMi Battery

Overheating – The laptop battery or laptop charger will produce heat during the working process, so you can check the computer’s cooling fan; it may be clogged or malfunctioning which may lead to overheating of the processor. Check for obstruction of fan and ventilation slots. Your computer technician may be able to resolve clogging with a blast of compressed air and some cleaning. However, it may be best to replace the fan at the first sign of trouble.

Bad RAM – Check if the RAM chips are overheating. Turn the computer off, pull the plug and open the case. Make sure you’re grounded and touch the edge of your RAM chips. If it is scalding hot, you may have a problem. One option would be to purchase and install a RAM fan that can be plugged into the motherboard. Another option is to buy RAM heat sinks that can help disperse heat.

Hard Disk Failure – A third potential problem is your hard disk reaching the end of its usable life, and starting to show signs of failure. If your system is slowing down, run scandsk or chkdsk (depending on your operating system) and check for bad sectors. If there are bad sectors, backup your data and have a replacement hard disk ready to take over.

Software Issues

If the above issues are not the problem, you can go to the next step. Start checking on software concerns:

Junk Cleanup – Computer can accumulate lot of garbage files over a period of time. It is advisable to regularly clean such non-used files (temporary Internet files, cookies, recent documents, etc) with freely available software.

Disk Fragmentation – As files are added, deleted or edited, the hard disk becomes increasingly fragmented. Retrieving fragmented files means that disk heads will have to move all over the hard disk in order to find the different fragments, and ‘arrange’ them in proper working order. Use the Defragmenter tool (in Start – Accessories – System Tools) to ‘rearrange’ your files’ components into contiguous areas which will make it easier for the disk heads to find and retrieve them, thus increasing processing speed. You should also run a fragmentation check on your computer at regular intervals and defragment whenever necessary.

Spyware – Spyware (more than viruses) may be causing your computer to slow down since they hog system resources. Invest in a reliable anti-spyware program that can run concurrently with your anti-virus software. Use Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and the MS Configuration Utility (msconfig) and look for suspicious applications. Kill and remove non-valid processes.

Check for and disable non-essential Windows Services. To check which Windows services are running, go to “Administrative tools” in the Control Panel and double click on “Services”. This will bring you to a window that will provide information on the enabled services on your computer. Disable those that you don’t need and check if your computer is running better.

Tablet PC is much smaller than traditional notebook computers or ultrabook computers. In fact, a tablet PC is a laptop or slate-formed mobile computer that is outfitted with a touchscreen or screen that can be controlled with a digital pen or stylus, or via finger touch. If you’ve got a tablet PC, you don’t need a keyboard or mouse any more. End-users can directly key in data on a tablet PC. It also offers greater mobility than a conventional laptop. You can enjoy a good trip with a high-capacity laptop battery and the tablet PC.

There are different types of table PCs available in the market today, based on industry and consumer requirements. The different tablet PC form factors are:

Convertible Tablet PC

Dell Latitude D520 Battery

Convertible tablet PCs are similar to conventional laptops except for the fact that the display screen is attached to the base of the computer at a single junction; this allows for the screen to be rotated at 180°, and be placed on top of the keyboard. This allows for a flat writing plane. Convertible tablet PCs are the most widely used type of tablet PCs as they offer the dual advantage of using both a conventional keyboard and a digital pen or stylus.

Booklet Tablet PC

Booklet tablet PCs are twin screen computers that open like a book, and are built with touch and digital pen detection abilities. Booklet tablet PCs can be used for web browsing, watching of Internet television, e-reading and so on.

Slate Tablet PC

Slate tablet PCs are similar in appearance to a writing slate, and do not have keyboards attached with them. Users input data through handwriting recognition, stylus and finger touch. External keyboards can be connected to them either through USB or through wireless connectivity. Slate tablet PCs are mostly deployed in industries that require a lot of mobility or involve working in harsh conditions. Such industries include manufacturing, health care, field work related industries, education and so on. Such tablet PCs are built to withstand extreme physical conditions such as heat, humidity and also to be capable of withstanding any impact or damage from accidental dropping or intense movement.

Hybrid Tablet PC

Acer TravelMate 323x Battery

Hybrid tablet PCs incorporates the functionality of a slate and convertible tablet PC. They do so by using a removable keyboard thus providing the functionality of a slate tablet PC; when affixed they act as a convertible tablet PC.

Why you choose a tablet PC? Tablet PCs are much lighter than laptops thus making them extremely mobile in nature. Ability to capture and store personalized input such as diagrams, mathematical and scientific equations, and similar forms of input. The tablet pc has faster and effortless navigation via touchsreen, stylus or finger touch than keyboard or mouse. The flat form factor of a tablet PC makes it easier for users to work on any surface and display presentations. It also increases interaction with other people in the work environment.

Do you want to enjoy more comfortable online surfing on your HDTV rather than the laptop? The HDTV has much bigger screen, so you can get better online surfing experience. When you have a huge 40+-inch HDTV and home-theater setup a few feet away, consuming your media on a 15-inch laptop screen with tinny integrated speakers seems silly. Wouldn’t it be great if you could pipe what’s on your laptop screen to your HDTV, and treat it just like another monitor? And wouldn’t accessing your collection of movies and music through your HDTV be awesome? Well, you can do both of those things, relatively easily, in a variety of ways.

There are plenty of options for displaying your laptop on your HDTV. Many of them are excellent ways to watch your movies and listen to your music. Only some of them are appropriate for Web browsing, video conferencing, or other computer-reliant activities, however, and due to slight lag with current wireless display technologies, only a wired connection is suitable for playing most action-oriented PC-based games. Here are your options for connecting your laptop to your HDTV. First consider what you want to do, then choose the way that’s right for you.

Watch Movies & Listen To Music

If you only want to watch movies and listen to music you keep on your laptop, several devices offer a streamlined media-playback experience for a low price, but it comes at the cost of little to no actual screen-sharing functionality. The Apple TV and Orb TV (and Orb BR Blu-ray disc for PlayStation 3 can access your iTunes library and movie collections on your laptop, without actually serving as another screen for the laptop.

While both Apple TV and Orb devices offer ways to make your music and movies playable on your HDTV without running a direct cable, they require a Wi-Fi connection through a local hotspot. If you don’t have a wireless router, you can forget about using them. Of course, if you have a notebook, odds are you’re already enjoying the fruits of Wi-Fi in your home.

Play Computer Games On HDTV

Many recent notebooks offer built-in HDMI outputs, and those that don’t, typically have DVI ports (which can connect to HDMI ports through an adapter) or VGA ports (which can connect to PC ports found on most HDTVs). If you don’t mind being physically tethered to your screen by a length of cable, you can just plug it in and treat your TV like a second monitor. Since the HDMI/DVI/VGA connection can be video-only (a decreasingly common trend, but a possible one, especially if you use a DVI-to-HDMI adapter), you might need to use an audio patch cable to connect the notebook’s audio to either the HDTV or a nearby set of speakers. Still, a direct, wired connection is the best method if you value speed over all else. With a cable, you’re guaranteed zero latency between the notebook and the HDTV, making twitch gaming (first-person shooters and other action-heavy games) possible.

Wireless HDMI Connectors

If you have an HDMI port on your laptop and don’t want to run a HDMI cable from the laptop to your HDTV, you can still put that port to good use with a wireless HDMI kit, like the Vizio XWH200 Universal Wireless HD Video & Audio Kit, Asus WiCast, and Rocketfish 4-Port Wireless HD Kit. Wireless HDMI systems let you plug your notebook into an HDMI transmitter and your HDTV into an HDMI receiver, and have them act as if a single long cable ran between the two devices. Some kits, like the Rocketfish 4-port kit and the Vizio XWH200 kit, can double as HDMI switches, handling up to four HDMI devices at once and switching between them with a remote.

The main drawback to wireless HDMI devices, and wireless HDMI switches in particular, is that you still need to make the room and set up the transmitter just right. Multiple-port kits tend to be too large to keep close to the notebook, and are usually more suited for cabinets and racks where multiple pieces of home theater equipment might be sitting. Even the one-port WiCast has a power-hungry transmitter that requires either two free USB ports or an AC adapter, making it less than ideal for quick-and-simple connections between your laptop and HDTV. The audio and video quality are identical to running an HDMI cable, but, like all other wireless solutions, the potential for slight latency makes it less than ideal for twitch gaming.

A desktop computer has more fans and larger space than a notebook computer, so it can easily handle the excess heat in the working process. Overheat will do harm to different components of the laptop such as the hard drive, memory and mother board, so you need to choose the right way to monitor the laptop temperature. Monitoring the temperature of the laptop ensures that it doesn’t ever get too hot that damage is brought to the hardware within the machine.

The Reason for Overheat

Before monitoring even begins, it is important to know what causes heat to increase in a laptop. Because of many different advanced features that modern day computers have, it is not uncommon for the processor to have to run at full speed, especially when playing large games. The laptop battery or other power supplies, such as external laptop batteries or laptop AC adapters, will also radiate heat when your notebook computer is running on it. As time goes on, the processor generates heat, especially with it running at full speed.

Dell PA-15 150W 19.5V 7.7A Adapter

Another cause is general use. When the computer is first turned on, it is at room temperature. However, as the processor runs as well as other components, it begins to generate heat. After about an hour or two, the laptop has reached the maximum temperature. When this happens, the laptop slows the processor down.

To ensure that the laptop doesn’t heat up too much, it is important to keep the fans completely free from obstructions. With a high pressurized air can, clean the blades of the fan to get any dust and dirt off. The cleaner the fans are, the more cool air that can be circulated.

Most modern laptops come equipped with temperature sensors on both the CPU and the hard drive. However, should that not be the case, there is free software online that can monitor the temperature. Core Temp is a small program that can precisely tell the temperature of each core. The other is called MobileMeter. This one monitors the temperature, but also the CPU clock, battery charge/discharge rate and the HDD temperature. Both programs are great to have and provide up to the minute analysis on the temperature of the drives.

In the end, keeping an eye on the laptop temperature and then taking action should it be getting hot–whether that means cleaning the fans or getting off the laptop for a short while–can really save your notebook computer. Otherwise, the laptop will begin shutting down without notice as the computer tries to do things to keep itself cool.

HP Slate 8 has very attractive design, and this tablet computer is powered by Windows 8. HP company decides to launch this mobile machine in this fall, points to a robust mobile computing device that will appeal to consumer and business users alike. Our speculation: The Slate 8 will become a part of the accessory options of business users.

Plans for the HP Slate 8 were leaked over the weekend and quickly went viral. The device is as large as the Apple iPad with a 10.1-inch screen, but thinner and lighter. It sports 8 to 10 hours of battery life, and includes both touch and digital pen interfaces. And, for business users, it includes easier integration with Windows-based networks and applications. If you want a high-capacity HP tablet battery or HP Compaq Business Notebook 430 Battery, HP Envy 15-1100 Battery, HP Envy 17-1000 Battery, you can get a qualified as well as cheap one at edealstek.com.

HP Envy 17-1000 Battery

All this should make the new tablet attractive to business users, but equally usable by consumers. While HP is saying nothing publicly about the tablet or its reported features, expectations are for the tablet to hit the market sometime late in the third quarter in time for the holiday shopping season.

HP hasn’t said much about its tablet strategy in the channel. Perhaps that’s part of the hangover from the disastrous tablet experiment known as the HP TouchPad. For that product, HP promised a concerted channel push, hoping partners would drive the WebOS-powered device into the enterprise and steal share away from the vaunted iPad. HP, a channel-centric company, will likely engage partners through the newly formed Printer and Personal System group under channel chief Mike Parrottino.

Around the same time HP releases Slate 8, it will be among the throng of vendors releasing new Intel-powered ultrabooks – thin, lightweight and powerful PCs that share many of the attributes of touch-screen tablets and conventional notebooks. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently dismissed the ultrabook concept as unworkable. He said combining a tablet and notebook would be like “combining a toaster and refrigerator.”

Cook is wrong on so many levels. At the recent Intel Solutions Summit in New Orleans, the chipmaker had several ultrabook concept and working models on display. The idea behind the ultrabook is sound, as it provides options that are currently unavailable in desktops, notebooks or tablets. At the same time, Intel expects a huge uptick in the adoption of All-in-One PCs, desktops that also share touch-screen interfaces in a consolidate form factor.
